How I Made My Karma Jacket + VIDEO

With the Eras Tour concert in Hamburg just a week away, I wanted to share how I DIYed my Karma Jacket! It took 5 hours, 2 glasses of wine, one supportive cat, and 11 m of tinsel. Here’s the step-by-step process.

Materials Needed:

  • Black oversized shirts

  • 2 packs of 15cm width and 9m long tinsel (I wear size S and I used one full pack, and maybe 1/4 of the second one)

  • Hot glue gun

  • Chalk for marking the lines on the textile

Steps:

1. Get the Materials: I found black oversized shirts at a thrift store (I encourage you to use second hand shops for any of your DIY outfits in general, please don’t support unethical fashion brands). I ordered 2 packs of 9m tinsel and used a hot glue gun to attach the tinsel to the shirts.

2. Measure and Cut: The first tricky part was measuring the shirts to decide the jacket length (I didn’t want it too long or too short) and the spacing between tinsel layers. I chose a 7cm spacing so the tinsel would overlap halfway. I cut the bottom of the shirt and the sleeves, folding the button part inside.

3. Tinsel Orientation: Before gluing, check which side of the tinsel is shinier and keep that side facing up. Apply glue to the bottom side of the tinsel.

4. Start Gluing: Begin gluing the tinsel from the bottom of the shirt. As shown in the video, I applied the first 4 layers continuously without cutting between the front and back until reaching the sleeves.

5. Sleeve Section: Once at the sleeves, finish gluing the tinsel to the back and then the two front parts.

6. Sleeves: Start at the bottom of the sleeve and work your way up. I used a folded magazine inside the sleeve to make it easier to roll and glue the tinsel.

7. Lessons Learned: Next time, I’d start adding tinsel to the sleeves first. The last layers of the sleeve were difficult to glue because of the tinsel on the front and back, which made it hard to access the sleeve area.

If you have any more questions about the whole DIY process, feel free to ask. Can’t wait to see you all rocking your Karma Jackets at the concert!
